The pellet intake to the burner is a possible path for the flames. When there is not enough pellets, air can pass trough and the flames will then go both ways, in the heat exchanger and in up in the pellet container. I'm working on a pellet valve design witch will block the pellet intake when the pellet level get to low.
Burning pellets in a wood stove is possible, but you'll need to use a pellet basket to do so safely. Burning pellets without the aid of a basket can cause permanent damage to the wood stove since pellets burn hotter than logs. Pellet baskets can also be used to safely burn pellets in a fireplace.
Pellet stoves burn pellets or compressed woods and produce heats. In a pellet stove, the fuel (wood pellets) is stored in the hopper and a mechanical chain feed this storage pellets to the burn pot where the actual combustion takes place. The outer body of most of the pellet stoves are constructed with cast iron, steel or stainless steel.
The first pellet stoves introduced to the market were boxy and looked more like simple unattractive wood burners. However, their designs have been improved and in many cases, the average consumer would have difficulty telling them apart from a wood-burning heat stove. Pellet stoves are available with or without a viewing window.
