Steam boilers are very common in industry, principally because steam power is so useful. Common uses for steam in industry include doing mechanical work (e.g. a steam engine moving some sort of machine), heating, producing vacuums (through the use of "steam ejectors"), and augmenting chemical processes (e.g. reforming of natural gas into hydrogen and carbon dioxide).

On the other hand, for high capacity, high pressure (HP) boilers, steam-water separation at the steam drum is accomplished with the use of mechanical steam-water separators. With the installation of these devices in the steam drum, the drum's diameter and cost can be significantly decreased.

A boiler drum is a pressure vessel where saturated steam and feed water gets separated, it is a pressure vessel because high pressure feed water is pumped to the boiler drum, the water keeps circulating with the help natural and forced circulation until it becomes saturated steam.
Gambar 4 menunjukkan gambar dari steam drum dan pemisah uap. Dalam drum ini, pemisah utama adalah siklon (gambar 5).
